Yellow and Blue and White together works.

For my mom's birthday this year we got her a photo shoot! We were planning a Memorial Weekend in Fargo, a sort of meet in the middle deal, and this came together too. Never perfect but we have a handful of images together that are forever special. Plus Evan can be represented on Grammy's wall!

Grandkids

He's always making us laugh. Always cracking jokes. LOVE HIM.

Isn't this fun? So North Dakotan.

All redheads, these adorable kids.
Happy Birthday Grammy! So glad this worked out and the yellow+blue+white+gray thing turned out well!

Glad in the Yuck.

Eli had one sick day for kindergarten. And it was only a four-hour Wednesday night sickness. That's amazing! He finished school Friday! FIRST grade next fall!

And we had a weekend with the Lipperts and my parents in Fargo. We had family photos taken Sunday morning (on Grammy's birthday, a pretty great gift I think!). We arrived home Monday afternoon.

Tuesday morning Eli threw up and Annalee followed suit and all day today much misery from them, poor kiddos. But how awesome that it happened 1. after school is done 2. after our family weekend 3. in the morning instead of the middle of the night!!!

And so far just those two. Whew! Not the best way to start summer but it really is the "ideal" time to be sick.

I have hopes to create a summer bucket list for us. We had a fun kick off in Fargo... but our kids do not love travelling. Eli on drive whining "my brain isn't thinking what I want it to think" - what?!

Evan is clinging to mommy and daddy very much so. Separation anxiety more than the big siblings ever had. He is hard to understand and keeps us guessing but he's sure precious. Excited for his birthday coming up!

Glad he's healthy today!

Songs.

Not sure if I've recorded this or not but each of us has a song or two. Made up by us, we all have a tune, a jingle, a diddly to our name.

Greg's is stinkin' awesome. "DADDY!! Daddy is a rockstar!" followed by a hardcore little doo-da. Mine is much less so. "mommm. mommmm." in a low, monotone drowl followed by random rhyming. Really quite depressing. The kids made up our songs. Eli's is from his baby outfit that Greg sang to "Eli the elephant loves to play, and munch on peanuts everyday.... doo doo do do do do do doo do do do do do do do." Annalee has two "A N N A L E E spells An-na-lee!" and "Annalee, An-na-lee-hehe, you are such, such a cute cutie, Annalee An-na-lee-hehe, you are such a cute cutie. Taco Johns!" "Evan, Evan debevin, Evan, Evan debevin" (he needs a new one).

Yesterday I overheard Annalee singing "Daddy drums! Mommy cleans! Annalee plays! Eli plays! Evan plays!" and versions of those same word combos. I'd like to think that my kids recognize my lack of musical talent but choose something I am good at to sing about. ;)

Her Day.

We celebrated Maelee's Day this year well. It was harder for some reason but a good sort of hard. And I'm finding myself over and over again glad for her life, how we are able to be such loud grievers and sharing our daughter with the whole world. What a gift good grief is.

This blog has been helpful for me to remember what we did the beginning of April each year since so I'm going to try continue recording.

Greg made french toast that morning, woke up early to make something different for the beginning of the day. Plan backfired. Annalee told me later "Daddy made the wrong breakfast." Neither kiddo was happy about the surprise french toast (which they usually love). They like their cereal, these two! He had Maelee's CD playing and it's been a long time since I listened to that and it was special.

I played extra hard with the littles. Crafting with the sister on my bed. Dark dancing in the bathroom with flashlights. Held that chunky boy longer.

I took the littles to TJMaxx. Retail therapy works even seven years later. I had a reason: I wanted nice pink (fake) tulips. And I found exactly what I wanted. Wasn't until I got home I realized there were seven blooms in my set! Perfect.

Evan wore the Twins onesie (under a sweet plaid shirt) I had bought in Fargo for Amy's wedding just after we found out we were pregnant with Maelee. Eli wore it for her first birthday. Annalee wore her rainbow shirt. I'm usually intentional in our clothing choices because I'm just one of those people.

Greg had his permanent crown put in that afternoon so he was in pain. We went over to Grandma and Grandpa's where they had pizza (requested by Annalee) and pink cupcakes (and adorable pink tulip napkins and plates). Auntie Amy bought us fresh perfectly pink tulips (currently adorning our kitchen table and bringing much joy). We had to eat, leave the two littles, and run with Eli to his school for his kindergarten music program (camping themed). It was pretty special to spend an hour with him, going through these stations, and watching him in his program.

We were all aware the day was special because of Maelee and I love that. We choose to celebrate her!

Recording Tidbits.

Oh man, the other day Greg, kids and myself were distracted watching videos taken from Greg's phone that he smartly (sure that's a word) saved onto the computer. It was just lovely to watch the kids a year ago, just see how they've changed and how gosh darn cute or hilarious they were at that moment. Take videos, people. It's capturing a moment in time and versus photos, you don't forget the nuances that go with said story. I'd like more videos of early married Greg and Heather.

And that motivated me to write down more of the current life we lead... because day-to-day goes by and you forget. Plus I have my mom's mom gone from Alzheimer's and my dad diagnosed with Alzheimer's and genetically speaking I'm pre-disposed so I'M GOING TO BE INTENTIONAL and write down memories. Also this fuels me to celebrate more. Y'all, celebrations are important.

  • Eli started calling Evan "goo goo" most mornings. No idea why or where that came from. But they are just thrilled to say "hi goo goo!" when they see him.
  • Annalee is into naming her babies and made up friends "Tina" or "Prina" or "Piza" or something that ends with "na" or "a" - she is often celebrating their birthdays.
  • Eli whines about an ailment or cries (perhaps a soccer player in the making here) quite impressively for attention. Maybe a bit of a hypochondriac. We may have fed into this. I notice it whenever I visit him for lunch or volunteer at school (or Grandma does), he's always quite struck with an issue right before leaving. Also right at bedtime. In his defense, I think he does get headaches and he does have bumps and bruises. But really, sometimes I just want to scream "you're fine!!!" (and sometimes I do, tough love, but he also loves a good snuggle so often that happens as well).
  • Annalee feeds Evan most every day. She loves to give him his baby food. She's a bit messier than me but she's darn good at it and it's quite helpful. She giggles, he's all about it. I took about ten videos of this last week.
  • Annalee often "reads" quietly to herself.
  • Eli is actually reading now and he's doing fabulous. I try not get over into his academics (he's five) but he's doing very well. His sight words this week are "use and but" and he has told me fifty times "b - u - t not the b-u-t-t like this" because up there on his favorites are butts and farts and poop and BOYS ARE GROSS.
  • Snack time = the best time in our home
  • Eli loves to add "B" to people's names and joke around. Beli and Bevan and Bannalee etc etc. He also just distorts words and rhymes made up words LOTS. Annalee has also started to do this but it's a bit wackier with her.
  • Eli HATES to see Annalee get disciplined. He always wants to intervene. Annalee has started to whine "I want the yellow bowl" or whatever in the morning. And when we started saying "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit" and she starts throwing a fit, we ignore. And Eli gives her the yellow bowl. So we have had to tell Eli he can't give her whatever she wants. It's ironic because often they are fighting over something but if it means she gets in trouble... he is quick to come to her defense (but not enough to throw himself under the bus either).
  • Every night Eli will pray first. Annalee often doesn't want to but I do ask her to "thank God for at least one thing about your day" and so she will often be thankful for whatever fun thing she got to do that day. Eli prays about his day often and family and random but always, always prays "please God no bloody noses, no bad dreams, no dark monsters"... the boy does have crazy bad nightmares at times.
  • Speaking of nighttime, future Heather - I hope you are looking and feeling fine being all rested. You better work out most mornings and shower and do your hair before 8am and be able to hold adult conversations. Because YOU ARE SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT. And it must be fabulous.
  • Evan slept until 5:30am, ate then back down until almost 7:30am three nights ago and I woke up a new woman that morning, ya'll. I was organizing the basement at 9pm that night. It was a fluke, he was back up often the last two nights. He's hungry but also nursing for comfort but the screaming keeps us up even with the awesome noise machine... we will get there but until then, "raising tiny humans is exhausting" and "I'm a permanently exhausted pigeon";)
  • Eli still wants to hold my hand. I had lunch with him at school today. He held my hand proudly in the line. LOVE THAT KID.
  • Annalee won't let us leave her without "a hug and a kiss!" every single day. If Daddy goes without in the mornings, she will scream.
  • I pick up dirty pajamas and blankies and socks waaay more than I figure I should. Somehow Annalee catches on to put hers in the hamper much of the time but Eli, every day I must say something.
  • Evan is pulling up on his crib... so we'll have the lower it. He's up from his nap, sitting so nicely in his crib but I bet if I don't go in there in the next few minutes, he'll pull himself up!

Lloyd Stories.

I posted this on facebook now and I'm hoping to reach as many folks as possible.

Many of you know my wonderful dad has Alzheimer's. Rather than wait until his funeral, or years when he won't have ability to appreciate, I'd love to overwhelm him with your stories, comments, photos, your memories with him. I'd like to make him a book to include all of this. If you have known my dad in any way, for years or even just met him once, could you please get me a memory? Tell me the kindness, the humor, the impression, the help, the conversation. Tell me the way Lloyd was as a kid, or during his bachelor days, raising his two amazing daughters, enjoying his hobbies or even into retirement. Perhaps you'd rather say thanks or give kind words to him. I'll take any comments, paragraphs, pages or photos you want to give. If it's just to post a few sentences here, that works too. Try tell me why or how you know him so I can help jog his memory if need be. And *thank you* for being a part of his story in some way. Comment here, email Amber or I at: lloydstories at gmail.com or text me.

If you know my dad in some capacity, if he's left an impression on you, do send me a blurb. I want to go through all these moments with him while he still has the ability to recall people and memories. I want him to feel loved and appreciated and to know that his life matters. He resonates kindness, has shown kindness to so many in his life, I'm hoping to hear stories we haven't heard before and smile with him as we remember together. Celebrating life is a gift and I want to do that now instead of after he is gone.

Thanks, friends.

Glamour.

Pre-kids Heather had no idea. Oh she thought she might. As she got older she really hoped to have an idea. But she was clueless. She had no idea what parenting was like. Such love and joy for these little beings. But also a very overwhelming sense of responsibility. Babies cannot do anything themselves. And you are responsible 24/7. And it's exhausting.

I want years down the road Heather to remember this stage. I know I'll forget. Just like the lady at Target yesterday who saw these cuties and said "oh! I wish mine were that age again!" and I immediately responded with "oh, but I bet you don't miss not sleeping!" to which she said "yes, that's right, thanks for telling me that!"

So here, future Heather, is why you are gratefully content knowing this will not last.

Evan is up usually two times a night. He's got some sort of nighttime congestion (allergies? my bad nose genes?) so he needs to be upright to help his nose drain a bit, especially if we let him cry. I usually just feed him because then he goes back to sleep (after weeks of crying it out and no change, this is what it is). Like the others, he'll probably be close to one before he is a good sleeper. I AM EXHAUSTED. Last night he was up three times, Annalee screaming once. I just want to sleep through the night again. I know it'll happen and I'm anxious.

My body is older. Still young! Yes! But the lack of sleep is catching up on me and I can just feel a shift change as I get closer to middle-age and farther from young me. My back gives out on me when I'm lugging this 21 pound cutie around and plopping him down into his crib. If I exercised and stretched daily I'm sure this would lessen. But see previous point. I'm not sleeping well. And I've never been a routine exerciser so I'm realistic enough to know that's not going to start until I'm actually sleeping again. Plus add to that I've noticed a migraine trigger is not enough sleep so at this point, I'm taking an hour of sleep over exercise. And the gray hair, holy moly.

I wiped poop six times yesterday. So many butts.

So much laundry. Our kids wear clean jammies every night (stemming from them eating breakfast in them and usually spilling) but I'm starting to realize how much jim-jams are taking over.

The older ones have some independence but Evan is still fully, totally dependent on me. That's nice until it's not. I kept Evan quiet to not wake the others for over 30 minutes this morning. Then I gave up and wanted to shower. I have a handful of toys on the bathroom floor. Evan crawled into my shower, folks. I love this boy but I would like to shower in peace.

I'd like to finish this, but Annalee just crawled up to me and said "Mommy, can you play with me?"

Okay, back to finish.

Another aspect of this I didn't quite anticipate is always being in a rush whenever I'm not with the kids. Always. If I am actually at the store by myself, I'm rushing to get done so I can relieve whoever may be watching the kids. Even if it's Greg, I'm still in a rush. I think as pre-parents, you don't realize that you don't get a single moment to yourself while you have a kiddo in the baby stage. Someone is always going to be responsible for them.

This is a big reason I miss my part-time job. It was a nice break to know you are paying someone to be that for you. And the kids are good with it because it's a normal for them. The stay-at-home bit is tough. Your house is dirtier because you are in it all day. You are cooking meals for everyone more. It's easier on many levels, of course, but as far as feeling overwhelmed with kids, it takes the cake. I do miss my part-time "best of both worlds" life, I miss having work to think on, adults to converse with, and being in a realm I'm really good with (work). I am trusting God to help me with this staying-at-home bit because in my own strength, I'm not fantastic with it. I never grew up thinking this would be my life. That doesn't mean I'm not embracing it. It's hard

Today my old coworkers are going out to lunch but the littles and I have been out and about the last few days and Evan needs a good, loooong nap in hopes to jump start his night (sleep begets sleep) so I can't go. Lunch here instead.

Sweeping the floor, all the time. The only reason I'd like a dog.

Replacing the couch cushions, all the time.

Trying not to be a control freak with the kids. Case in point: Eli's school is doing a PB&J drive. I had a jar of yummy blackberry jelly to donate. I thought about bagging it but figured Eli would only be in possession of it for five minutes from getting out of the van, to playground line up, to classroom. Surely it'd be fine. Nope. Mrs. Vollmers "the jelly did not make it to school safely. I think we got it all cleaned up" Mom fail! You try not type A everything but then...

What?

On the drive after school today:
Me: "How was school today? Anything different happen?"
Eli: "We had a hearing test."
Me: "Oh, how did that go?"
Eli: "What?"

Last week, Eli was thrilled to see his name in hELIcopter! He's doing great finding his "sight words" from school and it is SO enjoyable seeing him beginning to read.

He also asked me the other day for some "graham crappers" - and I didn't correct him!!

Annalee is interpreting bigger words and skewing them. The other day I was brushing her hair and she said "get the rectangles out!" She's awesome. She's also doing super at potty training. I knew it'd be easier if we waited until she was ready. Looking forward to only one little babe in diapers.

Peak.

I saw a deal on photo cards today and hours later I had the photos taken and Christmas cards ordered. I had no plans to do that today but I hadn't decided if we were doing professional photos yet (wanted to wait until Evan was six months old but then the weather is too cold for outside photos, plus indecisive about a photographer, and cost etc)... so I decided I'll just take individual photos of each kiddo (because all three together seems like way too much work). Picked out some outfits and since it was amazingly beautiful outside (can I get a hallelujah!), snapped away. Nothing overly fantastic but free!
Frolicking!

Lion, Tiger, Bear.

One friend thought this was a baby announcement. It is NOT. Greg is the oh my! He was supposed to wear it but this was last minute, too busy working on the tiger. The lion is a friend's costume she made. The bear was given to cousin Ali when she was a baby from my Grandma Doris (making it extra special). So naturally I had to make the tiger and the results were melt yourself cute. Too bad I didn't get better pics! Glad Eli was on board for a themed costume with his siblings. Read: he didn't even request Star Wars!

The big two had fun at daddy's office, then supper with Grandma before they went around our neighborhood for a bit. They got plenty of candy. I am not a huge fan of Halloween but loved it as a kid. Obviously! It's a holiday made for kids. Sugar!!!!!

So come on over, I have chocolate that needs a home that is not our bellies.

Week In Quotes.

Some quotes heard this past week:

Eli: "Who is Carson Wentz?"

Eli's classmate to him on tie day Monday:  "you look like a husband!"

Annalee: "don't pee on the rainbow" as she hands me her rainbow drawings while I'm in the bathroom

Annalee: "where I go?" as her lack of scheduling consistency leaves her guessing our destinations on any certain day.

Evan: "waaaaaaaaaaaaa" (he is waking up like a newborn these days, every 2 to 3 hours at night, and screaming, so much screaming, minimal naps, just not a great stage for us)

Me, overwhelmed from wiping all three kid's butts in the span of two minutes, to Eli, but more for Greg who was in earshot: "you need to learn how to wipe your own a-s-s."
Eli, happily: "I know how to spell butt! A-S-S!"
Me, trying not to laugh at him or my obvious parent fail: "No, no butt is b-u-t-t" and hoping he doesn't relay that spelling in school.

Eli: "Look! There's "to" in the STOP sign!" As he keeps absorbing all his sight words at school.

Lady at church: "he has got great thunder thighs!" (pointing to Evan)

Annalee: "my brain is going to pray" (meaning she's praying silently).

Annalee: "it's okay buddy" over and over because her brother is screaming unhappily (he usually fusses a few minutes before taking a nap... And by fusses, I mean he freaks out and screams and scares the rest of us!). But when he sleeps! Oh he's preciousness.

"BE QUIET, your brother is sleeping!!!" "Don't wake up Evan, he's sleeping!" "Let Evan sleep!" "Stop whining, you'll wake up your brother!" - Me, multiple times a day, because you never ever ever wake a sleeping baby, kids.

4:30 - 5:30pm.

We have so many kids.

I may say that to Greg occasionally. Three kiddos around sure makes life full. It's fabulously full and messy and overwhelming and tiring and fun and completely crazy. My grandmother was one of eighteen kids and I just can't fathom.

Currently I think Evan is sleeping in his crib. Nevermind, I figured out he was awake so now he is happy on the living room floor. And I'm raising my voice to the other two because they are up in the bathroom with water and tea cups and laughing and even though I told them "no water" - it doesn't seem to be working.

Ok, that crisis evaded. Minimal water. Even felt sort of a mom-win for letting them get that far without getting crazy mad.

Now Eli is whining for food.

And now they are taking my notepad and writing A's because Annalee figured out how to draw A's and Eli took her pen so he could teach her to do it his way. "Mom, I need a piece of paper." We go through SO MUCH PAPER. Glad it's cheap and recyclable.

The littlest is beginning to fuss. 16lbs, 14ozs yesterday and 24 inches. That's why I wanted to write a blog post, to get that stat down. Heavy boy, so cute, and after over a week of up lots in the night, he's back to just one time eating. Praise be, this momma is a fan of sleep.

Medicine is doing great at Greg's rash and mine is lessening with creams (praise be) and Annalee still has hers but doesn't care. She is THREE and fabulous. An older, very classy lady at the library called her "a cover girl" and said "real red heads are hard to find" and it "made my day" just to SEE Annalee peeking at her behind my legs. So how amazing that our girl can make someones day just by being cute?! And so very shy.

"Mommy, I need paper. Mommy, I need three because I am three."

So much paper.

Fussing into crying. Must pick up Evan and potatoes are done. It's about that time.

And the BEST part - I hear the garage door. Daddy is home!!

Rash.

Greg got the poison again. Last week he succumbed to another bout of poison ivy. Most likely acquired from Eli and him going on a "nature walk". Fail. Steroids are keeping it at bay and we are hoping this will not last months like the few times he got it in SC (remember that? it took over his body, so terrible!).

Annalee has a little hives breakout on her back from an unknown source (possibly new jammies). Unsure. But a big praise is she doesn't itch. I just noticed it at bath time last week. It isn't spreading (or going away either). Since it doesn't bother her, it's quite minor. Hay fever, allergies, perhaps?!

And I have some crazy itchy rash on my neck. It's not linear so it's not poison ivy. I went in yesterday assuming I somehow caught it from Greg. How ironic? I swear I can't let Greg have a sickness without me chiming in. Not sure what the heck this is, a reaction of some sort. But it's on my neck and itchy and wanting to take up residence in my nice neck and I'm not a fan.

3/5 - praise be the E's are safe! Eli and Evan are rash free. Especially grateful considering Evan's hands are hard to contain from touching my neck rash.

Just recording this to remember how crazy life can be!

Five of Us.

Sometime this summer, after I made sugar cookies because I was craving them, Greg had told me he liked them because they aren't overly sweet. So when his birthday came I thought "I'll make him cookies!". It took me six days but I did, finally, make them! 36 and 6 days is also to be celebrated, right? In my defense, his mom always makes him an apple pie (sweet, eh?) so he got a nice dessert on his actual birthday. In any case, Greg had a birthday and now he is closer to 40 than 30.

I've been back to work some. I put in my notice that I'm done in October. My position is wildly different than it was before, with my sweet elder program being cut most likely, and I just don't have the heart for it. That along with not having our amazing daycare situation means it's not worth it to work. Greg's cousin's wife and the grandparents have been watching the kids for the few days I've been in, praise be. I've yet to make it a full week and any moms that leave an almost three-month baby and other kids and get everyone out of the house and pump and not explode and keep a house running... uffda. I'm looking forward to a relaxed schedule. I'm not looking forward to having to pay for health insurance. I'm looking forward to just nursing Evan and not having to pump (but hallelujah hands that he will take a bottle!). I'll miss my coworkers and the really great work I was doing and I'll for sure miss job sharing. Me quitting may possibly mean a downsizing move for us, too. We'll see. In any case, this chapter of working part-time and staying home part-time is soon over (minus me possibly doing some PRN). It was downright amazing the past two-and-a-half years though!

Eli still tolerates school. He doesn't love it but he doesn't hate it. He is brave. He tried hot lunch one day! He remembers a few other kids' names. His favorite class is recess and "go noodle" dancing fun. He made his first "book" with drawings and it's just so darn sweet. He is tired at the end of the day and seems a bit more ornry but not as much behavior change as I was expecting. He still LOVES snacks and is always on the hunt for them. He loves quality time and focused attention. He still loves legos and playing. And he loves to make people laugh. He's a great, affectionate, older brother.

Annalee is doing fine adjusting to Eli at school and being a big sister. Well, I think she is. She internally processes life so it's hard to know exactly what she's thinking. She's still our introvert but a crazy side of her is just under the surface. So.Much.Her.Dad! She still loves purple in any form (her purple third birthday party will be soon!) and likes to color. She loves books. She can play so darn well by herself. She has been baby-talking A LOT since Evan has been born. It drives me nuts and I must say "Talk like a big girl" a handful of times each day. Potty training is going to happen when she decides. I know enough about our dynamic not to try until that girl has it in her head. Hopefully soon, October is my ideal. She is definitely in a bit of a growth spurt. She's still tiny but oh, so mighty! I am looking forward to art classes and maybe even gymnastics with her this winter, since she's still too young for preschool.

Evan is AWESOME. His head is still misshaped so we are really trying to get him to put hard pressure on that left-side bump to reverse the damage done. He resists the left so much but we are hopeful. We tried Grandma's chiropractor this week and will keep doing that, loosening those ubber tight muscles. One day he will spit up a ton, the next not much. One night he will sleep super, the other he'll be up more often. He smiles and coos but also screams and looks crazy confused. He's wonderful but loads of work.

That's my family update.

First Day of So So Many.

Eli's first day of kindergarten! He neither loved it nor hated it so that's a win overall. I'm not emotional but give me a few weeks and I'm certain I'll miss my darling boy and be a mess.

Today was definitely memorable. I got nasty cold yesterday (groan) so I (and kids) were sleeping until twenty minutes before Eli had to leave this morning. Terribly, somehow I chipped my tooth today as I was picking Eli up from school (!!?) and spent the first half hour of him being home figuring out a dental appointment instead of pestering him about his day. I also went "back to work" for three hours earlier today. Greg is in Fargo for the day/night for an early birthday concert fun night with his brother so I had solo parenting tonight. And tomorrow 8am there's a video shoot at our house.

I lead a crazy life.

I'm Mom.

I was never really into babies or kids growing up. I knew I wanted to have kids but it wasn't really my forte. I was a terrible babysitter. And me doing daycare would be a nightmare! God has given these blessings of kids, however, and He is given me responsibility to parent them, raise them, pray they love Him and love people. Ideally I won't screw up too badly most days.

Glad they call me Mommy/Mama/Mom and grateful for every (crazy, full and often overwhelming) day I get with them!
I caught a sleepy smile!
Her first time with painted toes. I actually enjoyed painting her tiny toes!
From the 4th - To show he (and I) don't always smile.
This boy needs quality time. And sometimes that means not vacuuming and playing with apps.
Learning how important it is to give kids focused time, listening to them and their cares.
