For those that have an opinion on this issue, please help settle a dispute between my mother and I:
She thinks I need to get the fancy pants diaper genie that will solve all our future stinky diaper issues.
I think it seems a bit over-the-top and with spendy refill bags, not very wise. Couldn't we just use regular grocery bags to tie up a smelly diaper and put them in a regular garbage can (with a lid)?
Let me know your thoughts (via email or facebook or comment) and especially if you have figured out a great solution to not having your place smell like poo.
I'm really looking forward to having this problem.

ask your mother if she has ever CHANGED a full diaper genie????? stink is stink----it just a lot more all at once with a diaper genie! :)
ha! I love this post and your blog in general! So heres what I do with my stinky diapers- wrap them up in an old walmart bag and stick them out my front door- then when we have guests over or every evening I bring my pile of bags to our trash can- which we keep outside the garage, because even with a lid.... it still makes a rather unpleasant aroma in the garage. Garbage day is a very very important day/event. I know a few other people who also put dirty diapers out the front door to collect later. The main thing is to get it out of your house as quickly as possible. :) Diaper Genie's seem pretty nice, but I can imagine there is definitely some less than pleasant odors when changing the liner.
On a side note- technically you arent supposed to throw out poo- its bad for landfills... I dont know of anyone, including me who actually does this though but anyways, once the baby's poo gets solid you can plop it in the toilet (as long as it hasnt been sat on in the diaper) that really helps eliminate the smell and it just gets properly disposed of then.
Heather, the room is looking great and I'm so glad you have such super help and even more fabric coming! How fun to make things soo soo super cute!
And as for the stink... it's always worked just fine for us to use the grocery bag approach (some really bad ones will need two bags! but not till the little man is eating much more) and then you have to take the trash out regularly but it works just fine for our standards!
We LOVE you all! So excited to hear that another appointment went well :)
I agree that the diaper genie would still release an odor every time you open the lid. We just put a garbage can outside our back door and throw the poopy diapers in that, you can decide whether or not you need to tie them in a grocery sack first.
I admit I'm the last person who should be allowed to comment - but all I can say is my coworkers (who talk about babies ALL THE TIME) LOVE diaper genies. And they're the cloth diaper/flannel wipe loving people...
Waste of money girlfriend:) When you're changing 3 diapers an hour, you guys will be taking the trash out constantly! Just one more trash bag to take out!
Just chuck em into a pastic grocery bag and toss that out in your regular garbage. That seems to be the norm down here.
I'm going to go against the grain here and say Diaper Genie II is fantastic!
I have a friend that just used a diaper pale with her first child and the room constantly smelled of poo no matter what she did. She kept having to tell people her daughter did not need a diaper change that it was the old poop diapers sitting around in the pale. She bought the Diaper Genie II for the second child and had no issues.
We use one, too. 12 poops a day in the beginning including in the middle of the night was hard to keep up with and being able to just chunk them in the Diaper Genie with no worries was nice. There are times when there is enough poo in that thing to get a wiff when you open the lid, but that is temporary (unless you keep the lid up all the time).
Let's face it, you will be going to purchase baby stuff a lot.... Tylenol, wipes, disposable diaper bags for your diaper bag, diaper cream.... no matter how prepared you are, you will always be heading out to buy something. I would just pick up a refill every so often while I was out to make sure I had backups at home. I have not once found myself without a refill at home when we ran out and I'm pretty stingy when it comes to spending money.
That is my two cents. I hate the smell of old diaper poo and I love my Diaper Genie II. :)
I use a regular trash can with a natural odor eliminating disk in the bottom that smells like lemon. When we open the can, it mostly smells of lemon. But we cloth diaper, so the smell is different. We also are diapering two at once which creates its own smell issues :)
When we used disposables, I put them in a walmart-type bag and tossed them out the garage door. Then my husband would throw them in the outside trash when he was out there. That kept any stink from the house!
If it is really money you are concerned about then cloth diapers really are the only option. Besides the environmental benefits most figures project it costing around $700 for cloth, $2000 for disposable but you can resell the cloth diapers and make a couple hundred back. Plus you can immediately flush the poop so that you throwing it away illegally and not feel bad about using the diaper genie for in between washes if you really want to. Andrea uses cloth with her twins. I don't know if she has a genie though. She could tell you more about living in the south. It's one thing to put them outside your door or throw them into the basement(what Mary H. does) when its cold outside. You can do it!
I would recommend the diaper genie as well. I believe it is the Genie 2 that has a dispenser at the top for baking soda. After each change, it dispenses a pinch of baking soda into the bag. We have had no issues at all with Mallory and her poopy diapers.
Prayers continue for you all and we can't wait to meet your little man!

We have the diaper genie, and I love it. It's so handy to just plop my dirty diapers in there all week and then just empty it on Garbage day. I don't notice a stink with it at all, but maybe I'm just immune to it :) I do have a small can of febrize on my changing table for the really bad ones (it was actually the same can I brought to my delivery that I put Nate in charge of in case any unpleasent orders arose :)
The refills are quite expensive for the genies, but every now and then you can get coupons and they go on sale at target.
Praying for a safe and healthy delivery for you two in the weeks to come.
I used the genie with my 1st & decided against it for our 2nd. When you empty it there is a huge sausage link of poop, & it smells so gross! Also, there is always asmell of diaper, even the genie refill bags have a strange odor :P We just keep a large garbage can outback, & when it's poo it goes right outside. Pee diapers just go in the kitchen garbage, ecause it gets taken out daily. I would say save the cash & don't have your home smell like diaper (clean or dirty).
Used the genie with H but had to change it about every 2 days and it smelled during the change. Just another trash can to change. Probably never needed it with her bc breastfed poop doesn't stink. Never pulled it out with E even though we had an extra ring of liners left from H. Useless. Use Walmart bags and take out the trash daily.
First child - no fancy genie. Second child - genie. I vote genie. Worth every dollar and you don't have to take the garbage out 8 times a day! Who knew poop was such a hot topic?? Am
I had the diaper genie for #1 and #2. It didn't really cut down on the odor...especially when the baby gets older and starts eating more solid foods. Now I do the plastic bag (#2 and #3) and either put in the trash or take it outside if it's really bad. I prefer saving money...and switching to cloth which I am super excited about! www.gogreenpocketdiapers.com...can't wait to start saving money!!!
I also used gogreenpocketdiapers - love them!!! They're SO much cheaper than other cloth, and the designs are really cute. They work great too. I use the washing machine as a wet pail so they're already there when it's time to wash. When I use disposables, we just put them in a little trash can in the nursery and take it to the trash can outside each day. Breastfed poop doesn't stink so bad anyway. I coudn't bring myself to spending the money on the genie when it's so simple just to take the bag outside. I don't know how much those geni's hold, but the little ones go through a LOT of diapers so you might be changing the geni before it has a chance to get smelly anyway.
The nursery looks great, Heather! Your little guy is gonna love it :)
I never could figure out how to use the Diaper Genie so when I had my daughter Reese I knew that I would not include it on my wish list. Plus the refill bags cost way too much. I had to find another solution. I found it in the Diaper Champ. You put the diaper in the hole, pull the handle over and that's it. The best part all you need is a normal trash bag, no special refills. Of course when its full you have to handle the stink. Good luck making a decision!
This is awesome!! Here is my two sense... I love the genie!! We used the refills bags with Esther, now I just use plain garbage bags in it for Jadon! It works great. Buy one at a thrift store, way cheaper.
Also, I use cloth for when we are at home. I do love them, but the laundry gets to be much sometimes. Then I will use disposable ones.
- I want to here the verdict!
- The room looks fabulous!! Can't wait to see more and hear this little man's name....always praying for your family
